From Heart + Mind is an exhibition of new works by eleven young, multidisciplinary artists exploring mental health, neurodiversity, gender and identity.
Drawing from personal experiences, the artists challenge ideas about trauma, isolation, stigma, inequality and sense of self. From Heart + Mind seeks to
reach the emotional space within and strengthen human connection through feelings and thought.
For From Heart + Mind, McDowell has engaged with a variety of materials relating to a traumatic head injury that occurred in 2015. A series of images
collected from a computed tomography scan of his skull, combined with objects directly linked to the incident have been collected, studied and altered
in a process designed for self-healing. McDowell has used the elements as a way to work through memories and emotions surrounding the attack that
have previously been suppressed. In doing so, the artist aims to confront the repercussions that violence has had on his thoughts, behavioural patterns
and other aspects of his day to day life.
