The Staging of Actions Past (2019), Installation View, St Francis, Images by Isamu Sawa
The Staging of Actions Past brings together a suite of nine paintings produced through a rule-based combination of spontaneous actions and typologies,
which continue McDowell’s exploration of materiality, process and ideas surrounding exhibition display. With a particular importance placed upon surface,
the paintings’ exaggerated gestural markings imply action, emotion and expression - highly subjective modalities of art production, which find correspondence
in their receptive countenances. McDowell subverts these tendencies not only through a process of mannered production, but also through the use of
out-of-the-tube coloration, standardisation of painting sizes, and the juxtaposition of comparable works.
Exhibition Date: 2-5pm, Saturday 19th of October, 2019
