Combining found and constructed elements, Cuprum, Cuprum challenges the processes, limitations and possibilities of the material. With an

emphasis on surface and ideas surrounding display, McDowell is interested in combining various sculptural methods with conventions that are

typically affiliated with painting. In doing so, he is interested in exploring the relationship between image and object. Driven by an intuitive

exploration of industrial materials and processes, the work examines the soft and ductile nature of copper while addressing its’ scientific principles

and historical associations. Drawing on the Modernist lexicon of sculpture and painting, McDowell intends to scrutinise the manufactured forms

through a series of material interventions.
