Bruise

Bruise is a series of paintings that marks a new departure within my artistic practice, drawing on found, stock imagery sourced online and inspired by my interests in psychology, microscopy and biology. They explore the relationship between micro and macro within the field of fractal geometry, while considering personal and societal narratives relating to health, illness and disease. Bruise examines how physical trauma presents itself on the body - acknowledging these markings as processes of healing - and shinning a light on the transformative nature of their temporal existence.

Rendered in various shades of purple, pink, green and yellow, Bruise continues my ongoing exploration of fabrication processes and the poetics of materials. Faint and amorphous in appearance, the artworks have created through the application of thin, translucent glazes using mop brushes. When extending beyond this scientific framework, the artworks allow the potential for different views and interpretations to arise, intended to shift the viewers perception between multiple associations. By questioning our relationship to the subject matter, I am interested in the blurring of imagery that occurs between representation and abstraction – observation and the imagination.
