Bizarre Love Triangle (2018), Mixed Media, Installation View, 2018 VCA Graduate Exhibition, Images by Nick James Archer
Sean McDowell’s installation Bizarre Love Triangle encompasses a range of mediums including sculpture, installation and painting. Driven by an exploration of
materiality and process, McDowell draws on formulated systems to construct carefully considered sculptures and paintings. He is currently fascinated by various
industrial appliances inhabiting the urban environment, which he re-utilises in a way that challenges their pre-existing framework and function. Through the formation
of networks, he attempts to re-interpret these peculiar structures, in order to shift the viewers perceptions and associations to them. McDowell often re-contextualises
and anthropomorphises the manufactured objects by juxtaposing distinct forms and surfaces, thus locating them in a place between representation and abstraction.
McDowell also creates gestural paintings, whereby he works in an intuitive, yet calculated manner to create works that deal with complex, explosive patterns. Formally,
his works are concerned with connecting composition, colour, texture and scale to ideas surrounding display.
